Special Events: Why Oceans Matter

Ellen Prager, PhD - Presenter

'How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when clearly it is Ocean.'
- Arthur C. Clarke.

The evolutionary tale of the Earth and its oceans is undoubtedly the world's greatest adventure, soap opera, and disaster movie all wrapped into one! Over two-thirds of the earth is covered by complex bodies of water that many believe hold the secrets to the beginnings of life. Yet, if oceans continue to be exploited in the ways they have been over the past 30 years, they may die.  Our future and the future of everything we know is entangled with the future of the ocean. Many believe that to preserve the sea is to preserve life on earth.

Yet while the oceans cover more than 70 percent of the globe, less than 5 percent of that expanse has been explored. Now our knowledge is suddenly accelerating: various dives, soundings, computer analyses, and other probes are uncovering amazing facts about the 142 million square miles beneath the seas.

Dr. Prager is a nationally renown marine scientist and author, who works with diverse groups including academia, the government, industry, the media and educators. She's been seen on CNN, Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS Early Show and is now focusing her efforts on finding innovative ways to bring science to the public and political leaders.
